Elite Dangerous Review 2023 - The game you HATE to LOVE...

Coffee game steamwhat was steam engine used for ELITE DANGEROUS game space no one can hear you scream but for us long time players are really dangerous that is exactly what we are doing we are screaming at frontier in what elite has become these past few years so for many of you who might be new and wondering if this is a game worth even considering given the recent troubles well let reggie explain in todays review because weirdly elite dangerous is both the best sin out right now and also the worst sim out right now when it comes to space exploration so buckle into your seats and lets have a little chat Music so lets get to it my pedigree charms elite dangerous as we know it today released back in 2014 but this was a remake of elite from 1984 which many consider the gateway for modern day space simmon and it was revolutionary people whilst graphically it might not look much today back then it offered the scale of space view had witnessed before and it was done so with such polish so we come on to modern day elite dangerous which gives you an area of 13.8 million cubic light years to explore with 20 000 inhabited systems and a whopping 66 000 outposts star ports and stations to visit google is my friend for new players this might seem daunting and seem a ridiculous feat to try and explore all of that but recognize that in 2019 only 0.942 of the map had actually been visited by players and that has risen to 0.05 come january 2022 and that for reggie is a really important part of elites appeal because i want my space games to feel massive and take me to the unknown so for new players know what lies before you is a journey more than a destination how poetic is that this is all well and good reggie but what the is there to actually do in elite dangerous great question lads as undeniably elite dangerous offers hundreds of hours of play in the milky way map you can explore with others via an always online connection but fear not because whilst this makes it a more breathable and living universe if you are sick of griefers or giving you a hard time you can simply switch it to the solo universe that is only populated with npc characters what a great little feature and i wish more online games would offer this and so you start out your journey in a crappy little ship with very little instructions given to you other than a very basic tutorial and it will take time to learn on how to get from point a to b which is done via hopping between stars now these jumps effectively load in a new star system each time where you can then explore the planets or space ports found within and the goal is really about getting bigger and better ships growing your reputation with factions doing missions until youve got a mega ship with all kinds of exciting on it and boy do you feel like you have a big penis when youre bowling it around space in your pimped up spaceship and this is all achieved through a raft of free choice you could explore the universe requiring you to map planets which have been unexplored or mapped star systems you can go into the very vast depths of the milky way where there is nothing but sheer blackness and im talking hours upon hours of jumping from one star system to the next as you venture out into the void that data can then be sold for hard-earned cash for upgrades for your ships then you have bounties which require you to shoot down targets track the little scallywags across the systems its high adrenaline stuff and requires you to master some key elements of your ship then there is mining which reggie here he personally loves it as you float into asteroid belts and hunt out rich minerals where rocks blast from within creating satisfying jolts to your ship and of course there are the cargo runs shipping goods from point a to point b and finally the more recent on foot sections of taking down bases or securing data now reggie year is giving you lot a load of in a very brief way but in each of these areas you could spend hours mastering those techniques with plenty full of youtube videos explaining how to do them effectively now we mentioned the ships and they in turn also require that mastering ill be honest kids i personally think without a hoe ass this game can be a bit tricky there are quite a few buttons to map here and undeniably it will take a few hours for your muscle memory to kick in you will need to manage power to your weapons engines or systems depending on your needs and like everything else in this game there is more to it once you scratch the surface obviously console players have been playing with their little controllers and theyve obviously succeeded no problem but i personally still think a stick is the way to go so far then what ive explained to new players and indeed returning players is a universe filled with hundreds of hours of sheer delight so reggie why the then is everyone complaining about because what im hearing here is a game that has a foundation where it can only grow good question little padawan because the issue here is where the game design starts to become uninventive you see the nature of elite dangerous is grindy more grindy than grindy like a dirty 13 year old teenager trying to grind up against his crush in a nightclub slow down lead frontier development introduced engineering a few years back and its purpose was to give those top-ended modules for your ships a little power boost you could say it was more kind of end gameplay type stuff but the issue is they made it so grindy that for many it just didnt seem worth it and lots of people would drop out but it sadly gets worse people and for me this is the biggest issue that i have above anything else in the game you see once you have been captured by the elite bug and you decide to play on and put in tens of hours to grow your ship you soon realize its near impossible to achieve greatness without some key community mods so for example i just mentioned the grinding nature of engineering well thankfully there is a simple mod out there which connects to your game that could track the items you need for the improvements and its a lifesaver people and even with this mod active it will still take bloody hours of grinding but it is a vital if you are serious about doing so and then comes the other key mod which works in conjunction with the website in ara which provides you your location in the milky way and tells you what is nearby so for example it will show you the nearest star port to your location or where you can buy or sell certain goods to say its indispensable is an understatement as i mentioned earlier the universe is bigger than zielinskis still good lad he is and so you almost need this to function properly dont forget people you can fly in a spaceship with technology that travels at the speed of bloody light but for some reason you do not have a built-in system that can provide a stock market like ticker of galactic pricing what really pisses reggie off is that i bet even the bloody developers of this game play with these community mods because it really is impossible not to as you get deeper into it that in itself sums up how convoluted elite dangerous has become and id argue there is so piss-poor explanation for new players in terms of the game mechanics and what the hell is going on that many will just get turned off by it i personally learned everything from some quite excellent youtubers out there and was able to learn that way but it bothers me theres so many games these days offer such terrible and more importantly uninteresting tutorials likewise there is a shout out of desperation from the community to better the more standard features in the game in particular exploration which is a major delight for many of you with the advent of the on for exploration through the latest dlc you would hope that there was something in this but instead so much is now focused around combat in particular with those on foot areas that you start to feel the potential of what elite could offer goes down a one-track path speaking of which elite is in essence split into three components which is of course the base game then there was the first dlc called elite horizons which offered the ability to land on planets which is now of course free and now we have the latest dlc called odyssey and that gives us a first person mode of planets and frankly the latter has been an unmitigated disaster the problem is this people if youre gonna make it very combat focused then make it sharp make it snappy make it highly functional in a day and age of halo battlefield call of duty our expectations differ now im not saying that elite dangerous odyssey needs to even compete or compare to any of these releases but you are paying for a full paid dlc and that means that we demand so much more and unfortunately the combat is hollow its slow its lifeless in its execution and worst of all for elite odyssey it broke for me a fundamental part of what made elite so special and that is vr now ive not done any vr reviews on this channel as yet as i want to get the recording just right but alas ive played practically every game in vr that you can imagine and honestly elite dangerous still wows me more than even half-life alex its simply sensational and do whatever you can to experience this game in vr as its the sheer scale that plays its role on you as you come home to land on planets and its hard in your mouth moments people when you manually control your ship through a space pool and there is nothing more frightening in all that is holy on earth than going through a neutron star for an additional jump boost in vr mode generally terrifying stuff so much so that i would torture frank the mank by doing it and so because of elite odyssey and the technical limitations theyve actually been unable to transfer over the on foot elements into vr and instead what happens when youre using a headset you just get a flat screen now i will say this its not as bad as reggie thought it would be and it is totally playable in this way which you know as you hop from one mode to the next on your headset its okay so you go into your ship and up pops the immersion again however it is still a huge letdown in the theyve taken something so bloody special and ruined it and thats the other sad part about it people because i still think it looks incredible in its own beautiful way when you traverse across the expanse of a star system and you come to a rocky planet with a thin atmosphere and you see those two suns orbiting around your chosen planet as a little light sort of beams down on your ship you so delicately landed there i mean its just its just glorious and it leaves you wanting more as these moments exist everywhere in a milky way with only 99.5 of it still left to go and also as you go about in your travels the skybox changes to present you with new backgrounds based on your location or the particular nebula that you might come across so with all this beauty comes one major issue and that comes again back to elite odyssey and the dlc and that is that its an unoptimized bloody mess and whilst there are improvements from various patches it still is nowhere near where it should be now im running a 380 that johnny two-shoes so kindly got for me and at times it feels choppier than a 1990s adsl paul modern movie as for sound its a stellar affair with some lovely operatic music fading in on key moments such as when you land your ship at a space station or how youll be fizzing along in outer space and the music ramps up into an almost classical techno mix its very sci-fi and very space-like and im here for it the best aspects though are the moments of terror when you are getting intercepted in space flight or when your ship systems start failing as you enter a neutron star its in your mouth moments that add so much but for me the best sounds come from deep core mining as asteroids explode with a deep boom that reverberates around your ship with headphones elite dangerous is an eargasm and so the conclusion is really one of a game littered with clouds and silver linings or turds rolled in glitter in parts elite dangerous is the ultimate space sim and offers perfection in many areas and in others its a grandiose mess which only seems to get worse with each major release with the latest nonsense being that loyal console players being left out in the cold with further future updates and support and that hurts reggie because elite dangerous in my eyes even with all this wank attached to it its still the best space sim out there and so you cant help but feel sadness by watching its slow demise and with that ladies and gentlemen have a lovely day reggie out Music Music steam wallet card game In todays 2023 Elite Dangerous review, Reggie asks if its still worth it, especially for new players when the troubles of Elite are so well documented. Well fear not my pedigree chums because Ill go into exactly why this is the best and worst space sim in recent times. For those who want the two mods I use: Ed Engineer: Check out this great Tutorial on set up ED Market Connector: Another great tutorial on the set up. Both of these mods are small tools but invaluable for helping with the grind. Also check out these channels for great Elite content: Take control of your own starship in a cutthroat galaxy.
